EUREKA-EUROSTARS E! 4342
"AACs for ALL" is a project co-funded by the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce, within the de Spanish National Plan Scientific Research, Development and Technological Innovation 2008-2011 (Record: IST-020400-2010-4) and the Regional Development Fund ERDF.
"AACs for ALL" revolves around Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AACs acronym in English) and its integration into the SOA platform of IDI EIKON and the result is expected in the form of e-Services. Therefore, it has sought the complementarity with other SME R&D (Greek), an expert on the subject AAC that wishes, in turn, to demonstrate the functionality and goodness of its current AAC solution in a SOA environment.
Appropriateness of the project to the objectives of R&D Subprogram Avanza
This is a multi-year proposal submitted to the call EUREKA - EUROSTARS which closed February 8, 2008. Eurostars combines existing tools by choosing the best of them: exploiting Article 169 of the Treaty on European Union and putting together: EUREKA Network procedures and access to SMEs, Aid National Programs (financial assistance and critical mass), the Seventh Framework Programme (financial incentives). Eurostars works in conjunction with Eureka and the European Community.
Nationally, the proposal fits within the VI National Plan I +D+i: AVANZA I+D, in the typology: Industrial research projects and outreach activities and promotion of international cooperation.
AACs for ALL revolves around Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AACs acronym in English) and its integration into the SOA platform of IDI EIKON and the result is expected in the form of e-Services. Main Technological Objective:
Addressing the “e-Accessibility” challenge, creating:
- A comprehensive Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) for INTEROPERABILITY and INTEGRATION of products derived from AACs systems (present and future), which will be duly transformed into e-Services. These e-services will hide to the end-user all the complexities of technology, offering only e-services (not products), and always from a user-centric point of view, thus intuitive and flexible enough to accommodate everyone.
- Speech technology will have a specific integration in this SOA that will adopt/create the most innovative technologies following universally accepted standards and helping to make life easier for the users who need it most.
The specific problem that "AACs for ALL" address is the lack of e-accessibility by providing solutions and services to the reach of everybody that will make possible a unique ICT accessible solutions market. In Europe, people with disabilities continually have to face many barriers in using ICT products and services that have become critical essential elements of the everyday economic and social life. This deficit in the e-accessibility can be found across the spectrum of ICT products and services, for example telephony, TV, web and self-service terminals.
